“Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere you find yourself…” (author unknown)
I am an alumnus of Brock University, with a Masters in Sociology from York University, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Toronto. I have been teaching part time since 1999 in the digital technology and culture field. My education in Sociology and Cultural Studies, Classics, Literature, Art & Architecture, stemmed from an early interest in people, what they’re all about – as individuals and as groups, and what makes them ‘tick’. I have always been a social justice advocate, with an interest in helping people. I retired from the Niagara Regional Auxiliary Police Service in 2013, where I volunteered as an Auxiliary Police Sergeant for 16 years. I enjoyed contributing to the community with a ‘Serve & Protect’ vibe, but I felt that there were other ways for me to contribute to the Niagara community.
Like many others, I went through a huge life shift where I realized that the career and lifestyle I had chosen were not part of my Life Path. It was devastating and alienating, and I asked – “What now? Where do I go from here?” Sometimes it takes some time to see the interconnectedness of your life experiences, and how it is all preparation for something else – something bigger. I never expected that I would be where I am in this very moment, despite all the clues that were given to me throughout my entire life. But my journey has been rewarding, fulfilling, joyful, and so much more.
The Spiritual world has always been a part of my life, as a child and young adult. In retrospect, I may have been an odd child, quietly meditating in the bathroom at age nine, secretly communicating with Spirit. I read Edgar Cayce books from the A.R.E. in the late 70s and early 80s, which piqued my interest in natural healing and trance channeling. I was grateful to the libraries in Grey County for the somewhat obscure occult, new age, and paranormal literature they carried, which helped satisfy my curiosities and quest for spiritual knowledge. These libraries set the foundation for my spiritual journey. I was blessed to be raised in a loving home that fostered spirituality and an interest in the metaphysical world (and relatives who were also gifted), which countered the struggles I encountered with my peers; I was teased, bullied, and harassed, much like others who are ‘different’. I always felt just a tad displaced in the world I was in, and I felt some comfort in learning that there was much more to the world than what most people were aware of. And, importantly that my intuitive and empathic side made sense to some people.
My interest in these things continued throughout my life, but I was always a bit unclear on how and where this side of me fit into my life path. My abilities certainly came in handy in different situations and circumstances (both work and personal life), but for the most part it became hidden, a part of my backstage, a hobby – or something I turned to for answers and comfort when life was challenging. I never expected that my path and purpose would encompass the Spiritual and Metaphysical world in this way, despite all the clues that were given to me throughout my life. I’ve done many things in my life, but I never totally felt it was a good fit. I always felt there was something more I should be doing, that my life should have more meaning and purpose. In some ways I felt like Goldilocks, trying different things to find the perfect fit for me. Can you relate?
In May 2013, I took a leap of faith and opened The Spiritual Spa in St. Catharines – a space where independent holistic practitioners gather to provide wellness services to the Niagara community. In September 2014, The Spiritual Spa expanded and grew, moving into a larger space in Niagara Falls, where I am currently located. I am blessed to have a strong supportive team with me serving Niagara. The services at The Spiritual Spa offer people an opportunity to enhance their lives, on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. Balancing these four aspects is imperative to good health and happiness. In May 2018 – the five year anniversary of The Spiritual Spa – I launched my Shiva Gian Yoga Studio, after completing my Yoga Teacher Training in April. The studio is located in the lower level of The Spiritual Spa.
